A friend of mine has suggested touring in the Monte Viso area next year, valley based but maybe also using some unguarded huts. Has anybody been touring there and if so do they have recommendations for itineraries, accomodation etc.?

Yes. Apologies for brevity but no time to respond fully now. We had a great week circumnavigating Viso you should certainly go. Will respond in more detail at weekend.
I've climbed Monviso twice as well as most of the satellite peaks that have some first class rock routes to their summits. Friends in Saluzzo CAI have recommended the "Giro on ski" (round of Monviso) as well as some of the couloirs on its flanks. Been meaning to do it for a while but so far not got around to it.
Most useful maps:
IGC Carta dei sentieri e dei rifugio 6 Monviso 1:50000
IGC Carta dei sentieri e dei rifugio 106 Monviso, Sampeyre, Bobbio Pellice 1:25000 con itinerari sci alpinismo

Great! Thanks John, looking forward to hearing. I'm also interested to know what maps I'd need.
