The Eagle Ski Club - celebrating 100 years in 2025

We are the UK's largest and most active ski touring and ski mountaineering club, with over 1,500 members. We all share a common interest and passion for ski touring and ski mountaineering in the UK, the Alps and further afield. We also celebrate our 100th anniversary in 2025 - you can find out more on our Centenary 2025 page.

We organise over 60 ski touring trips abroad and over 15 meets in Scotland each year; from day tours and hut-to-hut tours to major expeditions. We have a strong focus on developing skills for ski touring and on supporting those interested in leading tours. We're also encouraging members to use low carbon travel options as much as possible to reach their ski touring destinations. We hope you enjoy exploring our website, and finding out about our Club.

If you're interested in joining our Club, you can find out more in our membership section or visit our Join Us page.

Managing risk in an era of climate and weather change

To mark the start of the club’s centenary year, we have a special feature to kick off the season with four mountain guides discussing the big, defining issue of the current ski touring era – how climate and weather trends are shaping our sport and decision-making. Click here to read the article.

Making things happen: volunteering opportunities

Our Club is run for members by members. We employ no staff, so we rely entirely on members who step forward to help run the Club. Many thanks to everyone who has expressed an interest in getting involved. We'd still like someone to volunteer for the Website Editor role. Find out more here: Volunteering opportunities

The Jeremy Whitehead Award

This is an occasional award to celebrate outstanding personal contribution to ski-touring within the club. Jeremy Whitehead himself was an outstanding club leader who led at least one tour every year from the 1970s until 2019. The club’s touring committee has presented the 2024 award to Rob Greaves for the key role he has played, alongside others, in the foundation and success of the club’s Leader Development Programme. The club has also awarded honorary membership to Steve Wright, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the club in many roles, over 36 years of membership, especially his work developing and championing a climate care strategy within the club.

AGM update

Around 90 members attended the pre-season get together and AGM weekend in the Peak District in mid-November with others participating in the AGM online.  All the motions were approved by the meeting. For more information read the post-AGM newsletter.

Ski touring on a budget

The costs of ski touring can be a barrier for people getting into the sport. The club wants to widen participation and devise ways to help members, particularly new members, to ski tour on a budget. As a way of kicking this off, club member Tom Lichfield has written a really useful guide, “Ski Touring on a Budget”, full of handy tips for saving money. And, if you want to add your money saving suggestions, we’ve set up a special ‘ski touring on a budget’ forum page to exchange ideas.

AGM and pre-season get together meet

This year’s pre-season get together/training weekend and AGM is taking place from 15-17 November. Our AGM is at 1730 on Saturday 16 November, at the Mount Cook Adventure Centre near Wirksworth, Derbyshire. You can find the agenda and meeting papers on the 2024 AGM page. The pre-season get together/training weekend is an annual event in the club calendar that is proving extremely popular. You can find more information on the event webpage. There are one or two places available on a couple of the Saturday training sessions (find out more on our training page).

Arolla25 centenary club meet update

Currently the Arolla hotel accommodation is already fully allocated and the overall meet is 100% full. We have a maximum limit of 180 members that can attend the Arolla25 meet (including the celebration dinner) so that we can manage the event safely and within the constraints of capability and facilities available.

The waiting list is being actively managed and ESC members on the list will be contacted directly as cancellations arise. No deposit will be taken for adding your name to the waitlist. If you choose to arrange your own accommodation in Arolla, please note it is very unlikely that you will be able to join club activities unless you have already successfully registered for the meet or get a cancellation place through the waiting list.  The waiting list will now remain open until the end of 2024.

The joys of train travel to the mountains

With the club programme now online, it’s also time to weigh up travel options. Many Eagle members are choosing to let the train take the strain. Not only is it better for the planet but it’s generally a more chilled and pleasant journey experience. We’ve prepared a special feature article looking at just how enjoyable and good value train travel can be. Click here to read the article.

Major plans afoot to mark the club centenary in 2025

Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the club’s foundation in the small Swiss resort of Maloja in 1925. During 2025, there'll be a number of celebratory events and activities. Find out more here: centenary programme page.

Organising activities with other members

Encouraging and supporting more ground-up, member-organised activities is one of our priorities. These activities can range from seeking ski touring companions at short notice to putting forward ideas for informal ski tours and non-skiing activities in the summer. To help support this, we've created a new member-to-member section on the website, which includes advice on Contacting Other Members, the Members Map, a page on organising member-to-member activities, a new Member Organised Activities forum, and advice on Creating your Club profile
